The Sigma Theta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu (Sammy) was founded at the University of Texas on October 22, 1922. Since that day, we have established ourselves as a strong member of the UT Intrafraternity Council (IFC) and continue to make our presence known on campus.
We have been at our current residence in the heart of West Campus, 2501 Leon Street, since 1963 after moving a few blocks from our previous residence at 1919 Robbins Street. Although the men living at the house change from year to year, there are two men that are the glue that holds our fraternity together. Leon “Daddy” Washington, our former house Chef/Porter, has been a staple of the Sigma Alpha Mu house since our days on Robbins St. Still going strong at 89 years old, he still comes to the house to get to know the current members and tell stories about the good old days. Larry Harris, our current Chef/Property Manager, has been a part of Sigma Alpha Mu for 14 years. He learned all of the old tricks from Leon and has picked up a few of his own over the years. Larry is there for us every day to lend advice and take care of the Sammy house.
Every year, the members of Sigma Alpha Mu welcome friends, other UT students, and potential new members to events at the Sammy house. In the Fall Semester, we have our annual Luau and Atlantic City events. Attending Luau, one can expect to see a giant volcano, bamboo, and maybe even a gorilla (costume) or two. Atlantic City, our biggest event of the year, has been an important part of Sigma Alpha Mu since its creation in 1983. Widely known as one of the greatest events on campus, we host over 1,000 people each year from all over the nation. We welcome members from other Sammy chapters all over the country, potential new members, members of other UT fraternities and sororities, and many other Texas students. In the Spring Semester, we participate in UT’s famous Round-Up weekend with our annual Carlos ‘n Charlie’s event benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association, for whom we raise thousands of dollars every year.
Currently, we have over 100 members in Sigma Theta from 20 different states and are continuing to get stronger. Although we appreciate the history at 2501 Leon St., we are currently in the process of renovating the Sammy house to keep up with the times. With a new freshmen class of 40 men, we are excited for what the future holds.
