What is Rush?

Rush is the lifeblood of Sigma Alpha Mu, without rush there is no fraternity and without a fraternity there is no brotherhood. Fraternities like ours depend on rush to recruit members which will best fit the organization and help it grow.

Rush is an opportunity for you to meet the fraternity and for the fraternity members to meet you. Through special events, house visits and invitations you may become acquainted with the fraternity and see what it has to offer. As a "rushee" you visit different fraternities to see what fits best, if the fraternity feels that you will be an asset to the organization they will give you a "bid", which is a formal invitation to pledge the fraternity and spend a semester getting to know the organization and its members. When you decide which organization you want to join, you accept the bid and are therefore a pledge of that fraternity and begin the pledge period.

What is pledging?

The pledgeship serves as a probationary period in the fraternity membership process where both the house and the pledge make sure that they have made the right choice. Almost always, after a pledge has been initiated they have a membership in the organization for life. Those pledges who demonstrate their commitment to the organization and its members are initiated.

Why rush Sigma Alpha Mu?

The Sigma Theta chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu has a great legacy at the University of Texas. The fraternity has always been a leading organization at UT and is now seeing an even greater success in quantity and quality of members. Our members are among the most well-rounded students at UT. Sammies are from a myriad of majors which include Business, Engineering, Plan II, Government, Economics, and Biology, among many others. The group is involved in intramurals sports including football, basketball, soccer and softball. We currently hold the highest GPA for new members and the GPA for the overall chapter. As a member, you will find support academically, socially, and spiritually; our members recognize the importance of all parts of the college experience and strive to reach the best in each. The Sammy Alumni are extremely supportive of the active members and are often great resources for networking, internships and even post-graduate careers.

Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship and Service, the four cornerstones of Sigma Alpha Mu, pertain to your everyday experiences in the fraternity. While some of the more obvious benefits of Greek life include social and recreational fun, building strong relationships for the future is one benefit that cannot go overlooked.
